Waking up to a cold shower or putting the kids to bed without a warm bath is never fun. There are some signs however, that you can look out for which can pre-empt a future hot water system breakdown. Seeing the signs of hot water failure means you can:
- Save money – repair / restore / maintain before it breaks completely
- Be prepared – have a smooth transition between different hot water systems
Most hot water systems have a lifespan of 8 to 15 years. However, over time the efficiency of the system will decrease as the internal parts break down. Sludge and silt that break down will flow into your shower, bath, basin, sink and appliances. It is important to know how old your system actually is. If your system is approaching the 8 to 15-year mark, it is time for a service.
- Producing discoloured or smelly water.
A funk that no one needs to see or smell. If brown, red or rusty coloured water us coming from your hot water system, it could be due to corrosion inside the storage tank, this can occur over time. Rusted water can be harmful to you and your family’s health. As soon as you are aware of this, act straight away.
If you notice your system is leaking water, this is an urgent sign of needing a service or replacement. Unrepaired leaks can cause mildew or mould to grow which also has the potential to cause health problems for you and your family.
- Noisy or making strange noises.
Most hot water systems do make noise as the water heats, however strange noises such as hissing, popping, cracking or banging should be monitored and attended to as quickly as possible by an expert. These sounds can be the inner lining breaking down on a storage system. If you hear a hissing sound this most likely means the tank has burst.
- Ongoing issues.
If you are having constant issues with your hot water system, it might be time to consider an upgrade. The upgrade will not only provide you with a brand-new hot water system it can also be a great opportunity to install a more energy efficient water heater, potentially saving you money, time and the planet.
