The festive season is the most exciting time of the year – but sometimes it can prove to also be the most stressful! We put ourselves under extra strain and pressure – especially when entertaining – and the same is true for our homes.
Having your home clean and in working order is a priority – especially if you are entertaining guests during this time.
To ease the stress and prevent disaster, in the lead up to Christmas it is a good idea to make sure that your plumbing is also ready – you don’t want to have your drains clogged up just as your guests arrive to stay for the week! Extra inhabitants mean extra pressure on utilities, including the toilets, showers and sinks.
Here are a few things you can do now to avoid inviting a plumber over for Christmas!
Prepare the kitchen
Busy kitchens and extra waste and can result in your pipes being clogged with food debris. Oils, grease, gravies and small food items can end up in your sink and eventually cause a blockage. Make sure to have strainers over your sink holes to catch extra debris. Also rinse greasy dishes under hot running water before putting them in the dishwasher or handwashing them. This will help to avoid your kitchen drain getting clogged. Once you have finished washing the dishes, let hot water run down the drain for at least 60 seconds in order to ensure that all the grease in the drain is completely washed away. And if this doesn’t do the trick, don’t hesitate to contact us – we’re more than happy to pay your pesky sink a visit.
Check the hot water system
Can your hot water system keep up with everyone using hot water not only for showers but for washing dishes and running the washing machine too? Encourage your guests to stagger their showers and run your dishwasher when everyone is in bed to relieve the pressure on your hot water system. If you have doubts about your hot water system surviving, or you feel it is running inefficiently, it’s best to get it checked by Seaview Plumbing. We can provide maintenance to ensure it is in top working order prior to your guests arriving.
Do you have bathrooms and toilets that are hardly used? Give these bathrooms and toilets a trial run to make sure they are in working order for your guests. Also, having a bin available for toilet rolls and other non-flushable items such as sanitary items, baby wipes and paper towels. This will avoid the temptation for them to be flushed down the toilet and causing blockages. If you have any leakage, bubbling, or gurgling noises from the toilet, give us a call and we’ll come and take a look. This is not the time to have this item not working!
